Giving Back

While most of us probably don’t have $2 Million to donate, we can all make a huge difference in our communities and in the lives of those in need. It doesn’t take a lot of time, money or effort to really make an impact. A couple years ago, my friend Lara, founder of the beauty blog Pretty Connected, started a charity where bloggers, editors, PR agencies, makeup brands or anyone could donate unopened excess beauty products to women living in NYC’s shelters and teenage girls in foster care.

Corporate Giving

Us beauty and fashion bloggers are always getting makeup sent to us or getting samples at events. While some of it we use, it’s often impossible to use all of it before it expires and not everything you get is right for your skin or hair type. But why let it go to waste when someone else could really use it? With that question in mind, Lara brought the fashion and beauty community together. Throughout the years, we’ve pooled our excess beauty products and donated them to women in need. Since we get more products for free than we can use, this is program that costs us no money, but makes a huge difference in the lives of local women.

New beauty products bring women confidence and it makes those in need happy to know that someone is thinking of them. I’m so honored to have had the opportunity to participate in this program time and time again. I even have a special spot in my closet where I keep my extra beauty products for donation. It’s great to have friends that inspire you to make your community a better place.

If you’re interested in doing some philanthropy work of your own, I would suggest finding something that aligns with your interests and finding a friend to get involved with you. Even if an opportunity to give back doesn’t seen to align with your interests right away, I would still suggest giving it a chance because nothing makes you feel better than giving back to someone else. Doing charity work with a friend can make it less intimidating to volunteer at a new place and keep you from canceling because no one wants to cancel on a friend. If you’re not sure where to start local food banks, hospitals and nursing homes are almost always looking for new volunteers.

As you embark on your journey to make the world a better place, don’t forget to get involved in Jewelers Mutual’s Band Together campaign by casting your vote!

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

Share Your Beauty Mother’s Day Charity Drive

share your beauty

Last week, Pretty Connected came together with Family-to-Family for a Mother’s Day beauty drive where bloggers, editors, and brands could donate their excess beauty products to women in need just in time for Mother’s Day. The launch of Share Your Beauty took place at the swanky Davio’s Modern Italian Restaurant on Lexington Ave and 45th Street. Over delicious food and drinks, we stuffed 100 bags donated by LeSportsac with 100 Birchboxes and countless product donations. Each bag was paired with a personalized Mother’s Day message.

In addition to the 100 fabulous bags filled to the brim, over 35 boxes filled with beauty products were sent to the Shelter for Domestic Violence Survivors and Third Street Women’s Residence at Henry Street Settlement to be given out on Mother’s Day! It felt amazing to be part of such a wonderful group of women who are beautiful both inside and out. It means a lot to me to know that we made a different in the lives of women in need and showed them how much they are loved on Mother’s Day. Congratulation to my good friends Lara Eurdolian and Ashley Tschudin for making this possible.

For anyone interested in donating unused beauty products please contact ShareYourBeauty@Family-to-Family.org. Check out a full recap of the Share Your Beauty event on PrettyConnected.com.

#PrettyGlamazon Scandal Beauty Night and Finale Party

Scandal Beauty Night

In celebration of the season 3 finale of Scandal, a fabulous group of beauty bloggers and I checked into a suite at the Carlton Hotel to sample all the amazing beauty products used on the show over glasses of delicious Tiziano wine. This scandalous night of beauty was hosted by the fabulous beauty mavens of Glamazon Diaries and Pretty Connected AKA Makeda Saggau-Sackey and Lara Eurdolian.

Scandal makeup artist Denise Hooper gets a crazy amount of beauty products sent to her on a daily basis, but only uses the best of the best when bringing out Olivia Pope’s inner gladiator. Without further ado, here are all the glam products used behind the scenes of the hit series:

Hair:

When it comes to shiny hair and presidential curls, Scandal’s hair stylist, Linda Villalobos, uses a BaBabyliss Pro Nano Titanium Marcel Curling Iron ($49.99) and Sebastian Cellophane In-Glossing Treatment ($35) to transform the actors into their DC alter egos. The Nano titanium provides high heat without damaging hair. Sol-Gel technology makes the iron barrels 37% stronger and 22% smoother than those of standard irons. The Sebastian Cellophane In-Glossing Treatment is only available in salons and has protein-rich infusers that illuminate every strand. This heat-actived formula enhances color without damaging hair and is both peroxide and ammonia-free.

Skin:

For glowing skin and bright TV-ready eyes, Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels ($30), Kate Sommerville Age Arrest Eye Cream ($75), Mario Badescu Facial Spray ($7), Mario Badescu Super Collagen Mask ($18), and Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes ($8.99) are essentials on set. Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels are one of my all-time favorite products. As soon as you apply them under your eyes, the cooling sensation is immediately relaxing from the inside out bringing life into even the tiredest of eyes. They are particularly popular with the men on the set of Scandal.

Makeup:

If there wasn’t already enough glamour on set, Denise glams up the cast even more with Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara ($28), Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara ($8.99), Neutrogena Nourishing Eyeliner in Cosmic Black ($7.50), Lorac Pro Palette Eyeshadow ($42). The Lorac Pro Palette Eyeshadow is my latest obsession. The vibrant colors and design are beyond amazing. So it’s no wonder that it’s sold out almost everywhere.

Front Row at the Express 2011 Holiday Collection Preview in Times Square

Socialites are no strangers to finding themselves front row at major fashion shows. Thanks to the generous invite of Lucky Magazine and Express, I found myself front row at Express’ 2011 Holiday Collection Preview in Times Square just a few feet away from Catherine Malandrino. Prior to showing their holiday collection, Express broke a record earlier that day for the biggest fashion show ever setting a world record for the most people to walk down a runway.

Before the show, seven other bloggers including My Visa Hates Me, Pretty Connected, Court and Hudson, MissWhoever You Are, Sweet Caroline in the City, Diary of a Fashion Addict, The Budget Babe, and I were invited to the penthouse of the Muse Hotel for some pre-runway drinks and makeup touch ups with Pre-Dame. I absolutely loved the makeup they chose for me complimented by my first set of false eyelashes, which were perfect for the occasion. After getting glam at The Muse, we were off to the heart of Times Square for some backstage access into the show. I have to say that this was the hottest runway show I have ever been to in far more ways than one. In the mist of a heat wave, the models flawlessly walked down the runway in this year’s winter fashions and holiday dresses. The energy was absolutely amazing and I am so honored to have been chosen to be a part of it.

Look at me! I’m backstage!

Socialites love bling and this skirt has it!

Express’ Holiday 2011 Collection is full of sparkle.  Prefect for holiday party dresses.

Love the blue in the skirt and of course the sparkles in the top.

Can you spot Catherine Malandrino?
