The 83rd Annual Academy Awards: The Morning After

I would like to thank the Academy for a fabulous night of fashion.  In spite of a few blunders; the dresses this year were fabulous Hollywood looks.  To celebrate my love for film and red carpet style, I have compiled a list of Socialite Superlatives highlighting the best (and worst) looks of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards.

Best Dressed: Mila Kunis looked like a goddess in a lavender chiffon gown by Elie Saab Haute Couture. It is looks like this that the Oscars are truly about.  I tend to wear a lot of purple, but the glamour in this dress is unlike anything I have ever seen.

Worst Dressed: Cate Blanchett’s Givenchy gown with the unsightly circle in the front looked like it is was inspired by Lady Gaga arriving in an egg at the Grammy Awards.  Though it may have gotten good reviews from some style commentators, I thought it was by far the worst look on the red carpet.

Cutest: Hailee Steinfeld, nominated for her role in True Grit, took no cues from Miley Cyrus when she walked out on the red carpet in a one-of-a-kind Marchesa gown that she designed herself.  Not only did she look fabulous, she looked her age.

Best Hair: Reese Witherspoon looked stunning in a black and white Giorgio Armani Prive gown. When it comes to an evening look, I have always been a huge fan of black and white.  However, her hair was the best I have seen in a while on the red carpet.  I am in adoration of this ponytail.

Most Balanced: Amy Adams sparkled on the red carpet in L’Wren Scott and $1.5 Million worth of Cartier jewels.  What I loved about this dress is that while the slit showed a lot of leg, a well-covered top complimented it.  When choosing the perfect evening look, it is always good to show one or the other.

Most Daring: Helena Bonham Carter should always wear black.  She looked fabulously normal in a dress designed by costume designer, Colleen Atwood.  Though she looked much more put together than she normally does during awards season, the dress was still very much her style.

Prettiest: Best Actress winner, Natalie Portman, looked ballerina pretty in a purple Rodarte floor-length gown.  The dress was the perfect design for any expectant mother.  She was absolutely glowing.  Black Swan may have taken away Best Actress, but purple was the color of choice this year on the red carpet.  It seems like Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis shared more than a make out scene this year in film when they both sported the signature color at the 2011 Oscars.

Best Pattern: Scarlett Johansson’s Dolce & Gabbana Oscar gown may have gotten mixed reviews, but I really liked it.  Both the pattern and cut really worked for her.  You can’t have a red carpet without lace.

Most Star Studded: Gwyneth Paltrow rocked the red carpet in a sparkling Calvin Klein.  She embodied the excess and celebration that is the Oscars while looking like a couture glass of champagne.

Most Memorable: Jennifer Hudson looked red hot on the red carpet in an orange-red Versace.  Not only did she have a couture gown to show off, she also had a sexy new body to strut down the red carpet.

Help PETA & Lea Michele Put Horses Back in the Pasture

Horses in the carriage industry are treated badly and PETA wants to helpWhile walking the streets of my beloved city one evening, I spotted a billboard that captured my vision for a better world.  It was an angelic photo of my favorite Glee star, Lea Michele, fighting against the inhumane treatment of the animals and the horrors of the horse-drawn carriage industry.  Witnessing Lea Michele endorse PETA‘s latest campaign was music to my ears.  Inspired by this selfless action, I too urge people everywhere to boycott horse carriages in exchange for limos.

More attention needs to be brought to this ignored issue.  Horses do not belong in the confining traffic of NYC or in disgusting Midtown stables.  These beautiful animals belong somewhere out in the country on a socialite’s Long Island estate where they can roam free on green pastures.  It has always been my dream to make a difference by starring in my own PETA ad.  So I urge you to join PETA and Lea Michele in their cause to rid cities everywhere of this miserable and unnecessary industry.  You don’t have to be a Socialite or even an aspiring one; you just have to have a heart. For information on the issue and what you can do to make a difference visit NYCLASS.org or PETA.org.

Christmas Cards: The Kardashians Go Nice; Paris Hilton Goes Naughty

Seeing that I am far too busy blogging my way into high society, I have not gotten around to sending out this year’s Christmas cards, however, lucky for those on the most elite of Christmas lists, Paris Hilton and the Kardashian Klan have theirs stamped and sent.  With a successful reality series, endorsement deals, and clothing lines, the Kardashains have had an incredibly successful year.  Therefore, it is no surprise that their Christmas card reflects the decadence of old Hollywood with the entire family clad in evening wear on the backdrop of a grand staircase. According to Kim Kardashian, her family Christmas card is one of favorite holiday traditions.  Audrey Hepburn would be proud.

To the other socialite extreme, the world’s most famous heiress, Paris Hilton, took a less traditional approach by posing Marilyn Monroe style in a low-cut sequin dress.  Since, Paris likes to be the center of attention, it is no surprise that none of the other Hiltons joined her in her holiday greetings.  Though some say this card is more naughty than nice, I think she was just saving paper by covering both Christmas and New Year’s Eve with the same card.  Happy Holidays Socialites! Feel free to send your holiday greetings my way.

Reese Witherspoon Looking Glamorous on the Cover of Glamour

Ever since her outstanding performances in the socialite classics, Legally Blonde and Cruel Intentions, Reese Witherspoon has held the coveted spot as my all-time favorite actress.  Her blonde hair and heartwarming smile make her not only, America’s Sweetheart, but a global icon.  Therefore, she is the perfect cover girl to ring in the New Year gracing the cover page of the January 2011 issue of Glamour.  Reese, looking red hot in a Burberry Prorsum dress that I totally want to snag for New Year’s Eve, told the magazine how her ambitions have changed since Legally Blonde, “My ambition has sort of broadened. I’m more interested in literature, art, public policy. And I’m really interested in doing more philanthropic endeavors.”  As an aspiring socialite, I feel that my ambitions have taken a similar turn since this blog went live in February 2010. Though party crashing and high fashion are still very much on the agenda, I also plan on using my social media power to promote social good with the addition of philanthropic endeavors I will be executing in 2011.  During my senior year of college when I prepared for change by making a change, I dyed my hair blonde inspired in part by the looks of Reese Witherspoon.  I have since dyed it back, but now, my favorite Hollywood star is inspiring me not to change my hair color, but to change the world.

Taylor Momsen Needs to Chill

On tonight’s episode of Gossip Girl, I witnessed the aftermath of the masquerade ball in which the vengeful masters of disguise Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen,) Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr,) and Juliet (Katie Cassidy) turned everyone against Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively.)  I guess when good girls go bad, they go really bad. Unfortunately, Taylor Momsen is no exception to this rule. Perhaps, you remember her as a fresh-faced teen playing an innocent Jenny Humphrey, a Brooklyn girl looking to fit in at an Upper East Side prep school, on the first season of Gossip Girl.  Look even further back to the year 2000 and you will find an ultra-innocent Taylor Momson playing the adorable Cindy Lou Who opposite Jim Carrey in The Grinch.

It looks like the Grinch has grow tired to stealing Christmas and came back to steal Taylor Momson soul leaving her with nothing but, permanently corrupted eye makeup and very bad hair extensions. But, it isn’t just her fashion scene that has gone bad; Taylor Momsen’s diva attitude has made her enemies in high places. Earlier this year the actress had it out with fashion expert, Tim Gunn. After appearing together on an episode of Gossip Girl. Tim Gunn claims that Taylor Momsen was constantly on her BlackBerry and rarely remembered her lines. In reference to the tediousness of filming the episode he said, “I thought to myself ‘why are we all being held hostage by this brat?” Well Mr.Gunn, she now looks scary enough to hold anybody hostage. I miss the old Taylor Momsen.
