Stripes and Sunglasses

hudson-river

I’ve recently gotten back into Mad Men. Like millions of Americans reliving the 60s through this hit series, I’m very much looking forward to the season finale on Sunday. Though I’m quite intrigued by the story, I mostly watch for the fashion. Now that the show is exploring life in the late 60s, I’m loving the shorter hemlines and often find myself scouring vintage shops in search of styles fitting that of Sally and Megan Draper.

Not having found a genuine late 60s mini dress, I fished through my closet looking for something similar. When I came across this short striped dress and Jackie O. sunglasses, I decided to enjoy a beautiful day with a luxurious walk along the Hudson River.

My Summer Wish List

summer-wish-list

With the temperatures rising, the rooftop bars opening, and the beaches beckoning, it’s about time I embarked on some much-needed summer shopping. So I’ve conveniently formed a wish list of fun fashions and accessories that I’m dying to add to my wardrobe. Apart from the Material Girl side of Summer 2013, there are so many warm weather activities in and around New York that I’ve made goals of completing by September. I can’t believe I’ve lived in New York for four years now and never been to Coney Island or Jones Beach. I’d also like to go to the Brooklyn Brewery and maybe even spend a long weekend on Fire Island, but I have to do some shopping first.

Sizzling Summer Looks & Accessories!

Summer 2012 is almost here and I couldn’t be more excited!  As much as I love the warm weather, I love living in a land of four seasons because the change in weather always marks a new beginning.  Plus, it’s always a blast to buy new pieces for your wardrobe and rediscover old seasonal styles that have been in hiding in the back of your closet for the past six months.

Here are some of my favorite summer picks for the 2012 season:

Favorite Swimsuits:

1.  Kenneth Cole Reaction Adjustable Printed Brief Shorts Swimsuit: A far cry from the string bikini, this year’s swimsuits are reminiscent of the 60s and far more conservative.  In a year where major stars have been seen wearing long sleeves on the red carpet, women are finding that they ironically feel sexier when they are a little more covered up.

2.  Kenneth Cole Reaction Ruffled Skirted Swimsuit:  I’ve always wanted a skirted swimsuit, but have yet to own one.  I’m pretty obsessed with this one.  Not only are the color and the ruffles adorable, it acts as both a swimsuit and beach coverup in one.

3.  Kenneth Cole New York Swimsuit, Animal Printed Foldover:  Can you tell I’m a bit partial to Kenneth Cole swimwear this season?

The Summer of the Dressy Short

When going anywhere, I always find it better to be overdressed than underdressed.  This summer, casual dressy has a new contender.  Shorts aren’t just for the beach anymore. They have gone dressy.  Mini skirts have always been a socialite summer staple and always will be. But, this summer we are seeing a hot new trend of dressy shorts as the latest alternative to the classic mini.

This style has turned heads on everyone from Lauren Conrad to Kourtney Kardashian. This new look even received a rave review from the harshest celebrity critic on Earth when Joan Rivers gave it her stamp of approval on Fashion Police.  Though I don’t recommend busting out the dressy shorts for your next afternoon wedding, they are a great choice to combine with your highest heels during a late summer night at a rooftop bar.

Retro-Inspired Swimwear for Your Next Poolside Bash

Over the summer on the east coast and all year round in L.A, socialites get their share of invites to awesome A-list pool parties. Since these fun events will most likely involve swimming, aside from swimsuit and beach cover-ups, not many clothing options are available to these events. Water may keep you from bringing your cell phone near the pool/party area, but it won’t deter the paparazzi whatsoever. Therefore, you need to be both pool and photo ready.

Retro-inspired swimwear is a great wear to show style both on land and under the water. Combine this look with a floppy hat and a retro hairstyle and you have a photo ready summer look. When you are going for a retro look, remember that less is more. Focus more on the “inspired” than the “retro” part of “retro-inspired.” You still want to look like you are living in 2011, just with a flare of the styles worn by the socialites of the past decades.
