Escape to Mexico

Cancun

I recently escaped the bitter return of the Polar Vortex at an unforgettable destination wedding in Cancun, Mexico. Though this was my first destination wedding, I certainly hope it won’t be my last. I absolutely loved lounging on the beach and swimming up to the poolside bar at Dreams Cancun. There’s truly nothing like life at an all inclusive resort. Even if I’d stayed forever (as I wish I had), the clear blue ocean, dolphins, and waking up to the sound of the waves crashing would never cease to amaze me.

I don’t know why I left, but I know I will return…

How to Style a Little Black Dress for a Destination Wedding

accessories

A couple days ago, I attended the beautiful wedding of my good friends Joan and Jonathan on a sunny beach in Cancun. As you might already know, it’s tough to find a tropical looking dress in the dead of winter. So I went with a classic little black dress by Cynthia Rowley and styled it with the brightest of accessories. I started with my favorite pair of Anne Klein yellow heels (similar) to match the sun and complimented them with gold accessories in the form of my vintage store find Just Cavalli bag and a Glass Layering Necklace (similar) from C.Wonder. Now, if only I could click my yellow heels together and immediately be transported out of chilly New York back to the beaches of Cancun…

How to Beat the Heat

vita-coco-coconut-water

If you’re stuck in the city or anywhere that isn’t underwater or next to an air conditioning unit, you don’t need me to tell you that it’s HOT out! For the last two days, I’ve avoided the subway at all costs and spent hours researching pools in Manhattan where I can take a dip. Mission accomplished! I’m pleased to announce that I spent the day swimming and tanning on the roof deck of the Manhattan Plaza Health Club. They have a great lap pool with a retractable roof so it can be used year round. I’m seriously thinking about joining.

It’s amazing how a little water and a lounge chair can help you enjoy summer again. Now that I’ve gotten a taste of the poolside life, I’m dying to spend a day at the beach. In the process of researching beaches I can take the train or subway to, I came across this awesome Summer Guide in New York Magazine. It’s from 2007, but I don’t think the beaches have moved, so it should still be good.

How to beat the city heat socialite style:

  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Be sure to drink tons of water. Since regular water can get boring after a while, I like to add coconut water to my summer hydration cycle.
  • Make a trip to your favorite frozen yogurt shop. My poolside day would have been perfect if Pinkberry hadn’t randomly been closed.
  • Visit your favorite air conditioned restaurant, nightclub, or bowling alley. If none of that appeals to you, then go shopping or to the movies.
  • Take advantage of your time outdoors. Many pool and health clubs offer day passes. Just try to get there early to snag the best lounge chair, especially on a hot weekend. I found this great list of the best swimming pools in New York City on About.com. Some are even free to use.
  • If you have a friend who doesn’t have air conditioning, invite them over to “share the air.” If you belong to a health club with a pool, you should also share the love. Trust me, it’s good karma.
  • Show off your favorite summer dress!
  • Be thankful that the temperature isn’t 20 below.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Mothers-Day

Happy Mother’s Day to my beautiful Mother, Renee! Here we are on the beaches of her home country, Venezuela, enjoying some sunshine at our favorite beach club, Club Puerto Azul, back in 1987. I can’t get over how cute these photos are and how much I want to go back to Puerto Azul with my Mom and little sister. Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mothers out there!

An Amazing Memorial Day 2011 in Avalon, NJ

Summer is officially here and so far I have had a very socialite summer. I could not have asked for a more beautiful summer excursion at my BFF from first grade’s beach house in Avalon, NJ. Located around 40 minutes from Atlantic City, Avalon is an ideal summer destination on the shores of South Jersey to connect with old friends.  As a Delaware girl gone New Yorker, I am no stranger to the shores of South Jersey and the Delaware beaches including Dewey, Bethany, and Rehoboth Beach/outlets.

Aside from being the home of sunny quiet beaches, Avalon is also home to awesomely overpriced shops such as The Preppy Palm.  Soon I will be off to pick out a hat for polo in the Hamptons.  Is anyone else as much of a fan as I am of how I wrote ‘Aspiring Socialite’ in the sand?  I hope you had an awesome Memorial Day too!
