Guest Post: A Stylist’s Guide to Choosing the Right Little Black Dress

The little black dress first appeared in American Vogue in 1926. However, it was Audrey Hepburn who made it iconic when she wore an LBD in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. I guess we can thank Holly Golightly for turning the simple and sophisticated little black dress into a timeless classic.

Audrey Hepburn Little Black Dress

In the never ending battle between quantity and quality, fast fashion syndrome predominates our fashion experience. We are constantly bombarded by new trends of low priced clothes made of low quality materials. Because of the poor quality, consumers are bound to regularly buy new clothes. However, if you want to have a timeless LBD in your wardrobe, you need it to be timeless in the literal sense too. Opt for a high quality dress that you can wear for years to come.

If you’re about to spend money on the perfect LBD, here’s how to choose the right dress.

Body Type

The first thing you should take into consideration is your body shape. If you have a pear or apple shaped body, empire waist and A-line LBDs are ideal for you. Any kind of a belted dress or a dress that accentuates your waist is the right LBD for a rectangular figure. I think strapless LBDs are what women with an inverted triangle body shape need. Finally, you’re a lucky girl if you have an hourglass body shape as any kind of dress that accentuates your curves will suit you perfectly.

Fabric

The best fabrics for dresses are cotton voile, cotton lawn, rayon challis, double gauze, knit, silk, satin or wool. You have plenty of choices, but the trick is to find a fabric that suits both the season and the occasion. If you plan to wear a LBD during summer or spring, chiffon, satin or cotton are a good choices. On the other hand, choose wool, polyester or velvet during the colder months. For a formal occasion choose silk or satin which can be matched with various embellishments. For a semi-formal occasion, I think the best fabric is rayon challis or cotton. Choose cotton, wool, double gauze or knit for casual looks.

Occasion

Make sure that the shape of the dress suits the occasion. You could go for an elegant and sophisticated LBD for formal occasions and a more casual version for other events. However, I think that the best possible option is choosing a little black dress that can transition from formal to informal and back again. Simply change your make-up, accessories and shoes to best suit the occasion.

In My Jewelry Box

pearls

In the process of doing some much-needed spring cleaning, I went through my jewelry box and discovered a bunch of hidden treasures. The pearl necklace pictured above is from the Venezuelan island of Margarita where I’ve been many times with my family. It is also known as “La Isla de las Perlas” or the “Island of the Pearls” because of all the beautiful pearls they produce. I also found…

Tiffany & Co: For Everyday Wear

The time has come to introduce the world to my favorite necklace.  I may have never had breakfast at Tiffany’s like Audrey Hepburn, but I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner in this classic Frank Gehry Torque Pendant Necklace from Tiffany & Co.  It’s sleek design and short chain make it incredibly comfortable for everyday wear.  Plus, it goes with all of my outfits no matter how casual or dressy they may be.  I guess you can say it’s the little black dress of necklaces.

This modern silver design hasn’t left my neck since Christmas 2009 when my dad surprised my sister and me with matching torque necklaces.  It was quite a surprise because prior to finding my jewelry soulmate under the tree, I didn’t think my dad had even heard of Tiffany & Co.  But, apparently he really likes their customer service to the point where he knows more about their designers than I do.  My sister wears hers everyday too resulting in a special connection between us.  After all, when it comes to jewelry, it’s the story behind it that matters most.  Somehow I know that Holly Golightly and her cat would approve.

The Most Inspiring NYC Movies Ever!

It’s cloudy and rainy in NYC and this ugly weather will be making many appearances this week. But, no worries. It’s time to trade in your rooftop lounge chair for a plush couch. For me, bad weather calls for a movie marathon complete with delivery food. One of the coolest things about living in New York is that so many movies are shot here. Sometimes I will be watching TV and see a scene taking place somewhere I’d passed that day. No wonder everyone here seems to think they have movie star status. The small island of Manhattan is full of some of the biggest personalities, myself included.

When putting together a New York City themed movie marathon, I like to choose films with fun main characters who mirror aspects of my own New York experiences. Here are the top five New York chick flicks to save for your next rainy day:

5. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days: This movie is hilarious!  Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey have excellent chemistry on-screen as they cruise around New York on a motorcycle.  It’s great how they wrote diamonds into the storyline.  Rainy day or not, they are a girl’s best friend.

4. The Devil Wears Prada: Only in New York can a scantily paid journalist get free designer clothes long before they hit stores.  This movie has fashionistas everywhere wondering if Miranda Priestly is actually based on Vogue’s Anna Wintour.  Though many suspect, it’s never been proven.

3. Confessions of a Shopaholic: I have a bit of a shopping problem so I can totally relate to Rebecca Bloomwood’s passion for magical credit cards. Her writing also gains her critical acclaim from the New York elite just as mine has.

2. The Nanny Diaries: The epic story of a Jersey Girl who takes a job as a nanny in New York directly after graduating from college while telling her parents that she landed a job at Goldman Sachs.  This movie shows that no matter how confused you are when you first get here, New York is a great place to find yourself.  You can also learn a lot about anthropology from this movie so it’s an educational experience.

1. Breakfast at Tiffany’s: Obviously! Every socialite wants to be like Audrey Hepburn. Plus, I always cry at the end when they find the cat.
