Summers in New York

As one of the most congested cities ever, the citizens of New York often shy away from its hot summers in favor of the breezy beaches of the eastern seaboard. As long as I have access to air conditioning, I embrace a good summer day in the city that never sleeps. For me, summers in New York bring out some of my fondest Manhattan memories of the time when I first decided to move here. So when the city begins to get warmer, my mind reverts back to the summer of 2009 when I had just graduated from Syracuse University. It was the height of the recession and everyone was broke and obsessed with vampires. Due to the recent death of Michael Jackson, his music was blasting at every bar. I spent the summer going back and forth from Delaware to New York sleeping on friends’ couches and sometimes floors.

As I went through this incredibly turbulent time in my life, I fell in love with New York and all of the glamour it held for me. During that fateful summer, I would find myself walking the streets alone on many steamy afternoons attempting to take in some of the city’s splendor. One day after a job interview, I passed a Bank of America that had a screen in front of it that showed all of the stocks of the day. The whole thing was red and my future was looking incredibly sad. It was then that I decided once and for all that in spite of all odds, I was going to take the future into my own hands and become a socialite. So here I am, living in Manhattan still striving for socialite fame and fortune and loving every moment of it.

Classic Summer Must-Haves

Warm weather has hit the eastern seaboard and everyone seems to be in a much better mood.  Summer is a time for socialites to leave the city for the sunny designer clad shores of the Hamptons. This classically sacred tradition is rooted in the desire for relaxation.  In spite of all of the stifling heat that seems to get worse and worse every year due to global warming, during the summer months, the city continues to move at its ridiculously fast pace that we only pretend to keep up with.  Vacating your penthouse in the city in favor of your beachside mansion is the only way to really escape the heat.

Here are my five top summer picks that you won’t want to forget to pack:

1. White Shorts: White shorts are a classic part of the casual summer outfit.  They transition well from day to night along with the beach to the shopping/dining scene.

2. Sunscreen: Contrary to popular belief, you will still get tan even if you apply sunscreen.  So wear it along with your Chanel sunglasses.

3. Fit Flops: Walking on sand is said to be an excellent workout.  With Fit Flops, you can get that same effect both on and off the beach to tone up your legs for those hot summer fashions.

4. Your favorite bikini: Socialite or not, bikini shopping can be one of the less savory parts of summer.  Therefore, when you find the perfect one, it is like finding your summer soulmate.  My advice is to buy it in every color.

5. A Signature Sundress: Never go onto the awesome summer scene without an equally awesome sundress.

An Amazing Memorial Day 2011 in Avalon, NJ

Summer is officially here and so far I have had a very socialite summer. I could not have asked for a more beautiful summer excursion at my BFF from first grade’s beach house in Avalon, NJ. Located around 40 minutes from Atlantic City, Avalon is an ideal summer destination on the shores of South Jersey to connect with old friends.  As a Delaware girl gone New Yorker, I am no stranger to the shores of South Jersey and the Delaware beaches including Dewey, Bethany, and Rehoboth Beach/outlets.

Aside from being the home of sunny quiet beaches, Avalon is also home to awesomely overpriced shops such as The Preppy Palm.  Soon I will be off to pick out a hat for polo in the Hamptons.  Is anyone else as much of a fan as I am of how I wrote ‘Aspiring Socialite’ in the sand?  I hope you had an awesome Memorial Day too!

A Typical Monday in the Life of An Aspiring Socialite

Starting off the week with a socialite flair: Mondays don’t always have to be bland. In the world of elite socialites, they barely even exist. I blog with the belief that one day, my life will consist of one big weekend. In a city of black, white, and grey I took the liberty of brightening up my Monday with a pair of hot pink capris with the intention of making NYC more like Miami Beach. Just like any New Yorker, I really do enjoy the combination of dressing in all black with one unique accessory to stand out, however, once the weather gets warmer, it’s time to brighten things up a bit.

Turning heads: I don’t know what stopped traffic more: Was it my hot pink pants in a rush hour traffic full of nothing, but black suits? Or was it me stopping to take pictures of myself in reflective surfaces all over the city on my way home? Either way, socialites were made to stand out and aspiring ones are no exception.

Summer shopping: As you can see, I also went shopping at H&M to expand my summer wardrobe for 2011. They have some awesome basics for summer, however, at times it was hard to figure out what was a beach coverup and what was a sundress.

Aspiring to the great wisdom of yoga: At the end of the day, I took to Yoga to the People to expand my energy within. As someone with a life as busy as mine, I need all of the endorphins I can get. Therefore, I turn to hot yoga for both energy and serenity.

Well, that was my day. What do you do on a typical Monday to make yourself more of a socialite?
