Backstage at Diego Binetti FW14

Before Diego Binetti‘s Fall 2014 presentation, I was given the exclusive opportunity to go backstage and see what happens behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week. Two hours before the show was scheduled to begin, the models arrived for hair, makeup, and nails. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (love the name) did an amazing job giving the models dramatic smokey eyes with their 100% vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics. Since the collection was inspired by nature and getting back to the earth, the nail artists designed gorgeous ombre nails using Morgan Taylor lacquer made to appear as if the models had been digging in the dirt. Now that you’ve been behind the scenes, click here to check out the collection.

My Brief Career As A Teen Model

When I was 16, I made my first contribution to the fashion industry during my brief career as a teen model/actress on the local Philadelphia area circuit.  One day in 10th Grade, a local modeling agent came into my school on Career Day and asked for my name and number.  I didn’t think much of it at the time.  Having been invisible all through grade school and junior high, I mostly kept to myself in high school.  I’d just quit ballet and never made a high school sports team.  So I spent most of my time getting papers done weeks in advance for my AP English classes and writing for my high school paper.

High school and everything before that was an awkward time.  I didn’t really come into my own until college.  So you can imagine how surprised I was when the agent called me that night and asked to talk to my Mom.  She said she liked my “look” and asked if my Mom and I wanted to come into her office and talk to her about modeling.  We went in the next day where she told us all about the world of head shots, comp cards, go sees, and portfolios.  At 5’4, I was nowhere near the minimum height to walk the runway.  So I’d have to be a model/actress.  It sounded like fun so I gave it a shot.  Above are some of the photos I took for my portfolio.  It was fun while it lasted, but I was really more into school than being a commercial print model.  However, I often wonder what would have happened had I stuck with it.

Project Runway Week 5 Preview

This week on Project Runway on Lifetime, morning reality will set in when Melissa is the only girl left in her room.  The designers meet Heidi on the Runway, where she holds the infamous button bag.  Nina Garcia arrives to tell the designers about their next challenge.  They will be designing a capsule collection for the new Marie Claire at Work magazine.

Heidi tells the designers it is a team challenge, and everyone is disappointed.  The designers divide into two teams: Sonjia, Melissa, Elena, Dmitry,Alicia, Raul and Nathan, Ven, Christopher, Fabio, Gunnar.  The teams start to work, Elena clashes with the group, Gunnar is annoyed with micromanaging.  The teams head to Mood.  Back in the workroom, one of the teams discovers they are missing a bag and now have to improvise with less materials.  Raul gets frustrated.

Tim meets with the teams and gives his critiques.  He worries about Gunnar not speaking up.  After the designers finish their outfits, they get to direct a photo shoot for Marie Claire.  Elena clashes with everyone at the shoot, and argues with Melissa.  The looks from both teams walk the runway for the judges, and the judges are shown the photos from their shoot.  The judges talk to both teams on the runway.  Sorry socialites!  I don’t know in advance who is eliminated.  I’m not that famous yet…

Project Runway Week 3 Preview

The competition is really heating up with every twist and turn on Project Runway this week.  On tonight’s episode, the designers will meet Heidi on the runway and are told to meet Tim at the Southside Seaport.  When they arrive they find Tim and several Lexus vehicles.  They each get a key that will determine their car and their partner.  Their car and it’s color must inspire a red-carpet look to be worn at the Emmy’s.  They are told they have clients waiting for them.

Since there is always a twist, when the designers hop in their cars, they discover that their clients are former runway contestants.   In the workroom, some of the teams have difficulty working together.  Elena stomps around and bosses Buffi.  Christopher begins to lose patience with Andrea.  Gunnar and Kooan try to find a way to work together even though their methods are worlds apart.  Tim Gunn offers his critiques and the clients add their input.  Besides elimination, that’s always the scariest part.  Gunnar and Kooan’s client is demanding.  Alicia and Raul’s client hates their fabric.  Andrea and Chris’s client worries that they have her showing too much skin.  Ven and Fabio’s client is delighted by their design.  With all this designer drama, I’m already on the edge of my seat wondering who will be in and who will be out.

Project Runway Premieres Thursday July 19 at 9/8c on Lifetime

It’s time to cut – or be cut! The Emmy Award nominated series, Project Runway, celebrates its 10th Anniversary milestone with 16 new designers, beginning Thursday, July 19, at 9/8c on Lifetime. Not only will this season’s designers have to prove they have the creativity, skills and passion to dazzle Heidi Klum, mentor Tim Gunn and judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia, they’ll also have to show off their garments to the critical eyes of a live audience in one of New York’s most visited and highly visible sites for their first challenge of the new season.

You’re either in or you’re out and right now I’m in. In honor of Project Runway‘s 10th Anniversary, I have been chosen to be a member of the Project Runway Fashion Blogger Network which means you can look forward to exclusive previews every week on Aspiring Socialite.  Check out this behind the scenes look at Heidi Klum’s promotional photo shoot for the series.  I think I’m going to stop eating now and permanently station myself on a treadmill until this season of Project Runway is over.  Be sure to tune in tomorrow for some cutting edge fashion!
