Graduation Dress & Gift Guide

Graduation

It’s that time of year again! The time when high school and college grads look back on the past and celebrate a hopeful future. But, what do you wear when attending these fabulous functions? Whether you’re dawning a cap and gown or in the crowd sitting through an endless list of names, graduation apparel should be both dressy and conservative. Save your jeans, short skirts, and revealing tops for another summer occasion. A sundress or your favorite spring work dress should do the trick. For my cousin’s graduation this year, I’m pulling a Kate Middleton and wearing the same dress I wore two years ago to my sister’s graduation.

Now that you have the perfect (perhaps recycled) outfit, you’ve got to get the lucky grad a gift. You can never go wrong when you give cash or a check. At least, that’s what I always wanted for my graduations. However, if you insist on giving a physical gift or would like an accessory to go along with the cash, here are some traditional and a bit more amusing graduation gifts for a bit of retail inspiration.

Blonde Moments

Senior year of college I went through quite a bit of changes as I transitioned into the real world.  One of which included dyeing my hair a color I liked to call “Lauren Conrad Blonde.”  I know now that I’m better as a brunette, but I just needed to get the blonde thing out of my system. Here’s yet another throwback from my socialite life back when I was blonde, tan from Spring Break, and pitches of beer were $3 at Chucks. If you ever decide to go blonde, be sure to get it professionally done.  Also, keep in mind that the maintenance of such a look will cost you big $$$$$ because you absolutely can’t have roots.  I’m much happier today with my natural color, but the whole blonde bombshell thing was fun at the time.

My parents and I at my graduation from Syracuse University in May 2009.  This was really more of a defining moment than a blonde moment.

Senior year smiles & cheers!

Congratulations to my Little Sister Caroline!

Today, on May 28th, 2011 my little sister Caroline Sullivan graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in International Relations in a beautiful ceremony under the Delaware sun. I could not be more proud of her and can’t stop thinking about how much I have watched her grow over the past four years.  As I sit here at my Mom’s home in Delaware watching my Mom get ready for today’s graduation party, I can’t help, but think about all of the aspirations every graduation seems to symbolize.  Everyone is just as much of a socialite on their graduation day as they are on their wedding day.  The only difference is that the paparazzi are your friends and family.

Congratulations to the entire Class of 2011! Keep aspiring because I wish you all the best!  I am so happy to be with my wonderful little sister on such a special day.  She is total socialite.  She just doesn’t know it.

Kanye West also attended the 2011 Commencement at the University of Delaware.  His surprise appearance brings me one step closer to socialite stardom.
