KAELEN RTW Fall 2013: Cool Girls and Their Cliques

KAELEN AW13 Presentation

I love to explore the darker sides of both life and fashion. This Fashion Week, I was invited to the KAELEN Fall 2013 Presentation and regrettably couldn’t make it.  After being sent the pictures of Kaelen Haworth’s Fall 2013 namesake collection, I was even more saddened that I wasn’t there.  For Fall 2013, the designer was inspired by the idea of a traditional school uniform infused with stylings from the 90s teen horror flick, The Craft, a Halloween movie must of mine.

By elevating the uniform and creating sophisticated, sporty silhouettes, softened through the use of peony printed organza fabrics she created a collection of classy looks with a grunge edge.  I seriously wish I could have been there to photograph this amazing collection in person created with cool girls and their cliques in mind.

What’s in my Bag at Fashion Week?

DSC00470

With New York Fashion Week in full swing, it’s important to always be prepared for every show, presentation, and party.  As a Fashion Blogger, being prepared means so much more than wearing the perfect outfit.  It means packing all the right stuff to not only look the part, but cover every stylish moment like a pro.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Technology: Nowadays every great fashion icon must constantly be plugged into the latest technology so it’s super important to bring along your phone, tablet, or any other device to live tweet and share fab photos.  Whatever you do, don’t forget to bring along all chargers.  With the volume of tweeting, instagraming, and sharing, your phone will probably run out of batteries in 1-2 hours.  Luckily, most lounges have charging stations and Sansung even sponsored a bunch of charging stations around Lincoln Center this season for a quick charge in between shows.  Though you will be taking a lot of pictures with your phone or tablet, I highly recommend also bringing along a high res camera to capture better quality photos.  Be sure to pack your camera charger too.

Uppers: Caffeine is a vital part of your survival at Fashion Week.  Instead of survival of the fittest, it’s survival of the most caffeinated.  Massive amounts of Diet Coke, Coffee, and Red Bull will allow you to stay at an after party until 4 a.m. and wake up to flawlessly cover a 9 a.m. show.  Since I’m all about inspiration, I also like to carry around inspirational messages to myself.

Personal Care: When you’re running around the city to attend events with some of the most fashionable and beautiful people in the world, you’ll always want to look your best.  Therefore, I never leave my apartment without a mirror and brush along with makeup and nail polish for any necessary touch ups throughout the day.  Gum is also great to have with you.

Business Cards: Another thing never to forget is your business cards.  I’m already out and need to order more ASAP.

Duro Olowu for JCPenney Collection Launch

DSC00610

Over the weekend, the Duro Olowu for jcp Collection Launch Party at the Stone Rose Lounge was the place to be for anyone who’s anyone in fashion.  Even icons such as Nina Garcia and Iris Apfel stopped in to see the Nigerian-born ‘Prince of Prints’ collection in all its glory.  Of course I was there too.  I even snagged a few pieces from the collection which is set to hit JCPenney stores in March.  Scoring designer items before they hit stores is just one of the many benefits of being a fashion blogger.  This bright and bold designer collaboration filled with beautiful African prints is perfect for spring and based off of Duro Olowa’s SS13 RTW collection.  Since sundresses are a staple for spring, naturally, I want every single dress!

Ojon Treatment Triage Hairstyling Backstage at Milk Studios

5Y070C

Sunday afternoon, I escaped the chaos of New York Fashion Week and got my hair styled by a top celebrity stylist with Ojon products backstage at MADE Fashion Week at Milk Studios. I have very thick straight hair that I can never get to hold a curl so when I got to my styling appointment, I had my heart set on some serious curls and the stylist totally came through.  When I hit the Fashion Week lounges later in the day, I got so many compliments on my hair and my friends who have never seen me with curly hair were going crazy liking my photos on Facebook.

I must say I’m a huge fan of Ojon.  Their natural repair-based treatments are like an oasis for your hair in that they smell and feel amazing all while adding much-needed moisture to hair damaged by the stress of Fashion Week.  Any hairspray that can get my hair to hold a curl that well is absolutely unbelievable.  For intense hair repair, keep an eye out for Ojon’s Rare Blend Deep Conditioner set to launch in March.

Nicole Miller FW 2013: Girls Who Dress Like Boys

DSC00565

On Friday I braved snow, ice, and sleet to see the Nicole Miller Fall 2013 Collection on the runway at Lincoln Center and it was 100% worth it.  I loved her tomboy-inspired designs complete with dark tones and top hats.  It kind of reminded me of a modern-day feminized look you would see on Mad Men which is perfect for a day at the office or chic night on the town.
