Channeling My Inner Sofia Vergara

You don’t meet very many Irish Latinas.  So the uniqueness of this killer combo makes me proud to be one.  While my father is Irish American, my mother was born in Caracas, Venezuela.  Growing up, I would search the backyard for four leaf clovers then go inside to eat arepas, the national dish of Venezuela, for dinner.  Some of my fondest memories as a child were spent on the beaches of Venezuela at both Club Puerto Azul and the island of Margarita.  I really wish I could dance Merengue, but my Irish side simply won’t let me.  However, like any great Latin American woman, I live my life as the star of my own telenovela.

The other day, my mom came to visit me in New York and we went to eat at a Venezuelan restaurant in Queens. Half way through a tequeño, I finally asked my mother something I’ve been dying to ask her for weeks now.

“ Mom, please show me the way.  I would really like to be in a Pepsi commercial and have a clothing line.  Show me the Latin ways of Sofia Vergara so that I might become more like her,” I asked.

She answered back by saying, “If I knew how to be like Sofia Vergara, I would have been Sofia Vergara. But, you should really watch Modern Family.  It’s a good show.”

I guess there can only be one Sofia Vergara complete with her awesome style and accent.  Modern Family just wouldn’t be the same without her.  However, I’m still craving a bit more Latin flavor in my life of Northeast privilege.  Perhaps, my socialite calling is a bit more international.
