Can Sexting Help Your Relationship?

Sexting_1 (1)

In recent years, “sexting” or the act of sending sexually explicit or suggestive text messages has become commonplace. Usually, the term is used with a degree of humor. We may make fun of friends for sexting and joke about ours “sexts” at brunch. It seems as if Buzzfeed and similar sites have new lists of “sexting fails” just about every week. For these reasons, sexting tends to be taken with a grain of salt.

When you get past the humor of it, can sexting actually be beneficial to a relationship?

According to numerous opinions from experts on relationships, sex and psychology, the answer seems to be a definite yes. Psychology Today had an interesting write-up on this topic in which expert opinions are combined with surveys of couples’ sexting habits, with the prevailing idea being that there are some very healthy aspects of sexting in relationships. Dr. Yvonne K. Fulbright, the sex educator and sexologist who wrote the article, concludes that “sexting can be a valuable tool for couples who long to maintain or reinvigorate both their physical and emotional connections.” Specifically, sexting seems to serve two key purposes for people in relationships: helping them to keep up an intimate connection while separated by distance, and serving, essentially, as a new means of foreplay.

But it’s not only sex and relationship experts who are spreading the good word about the benefits of sexting. It appears that the actual “sexters,” more often than not, also report that sexting can have a positive effect on a relationship. An Adam & Eve infographic on sexting, which includes a number of fascinating polls and expert opinions, reveals quite simply that 56 percent of people polled who admit to sexting also say that it has strengthened their relationships. Of course, the same infographic reveals that 16 percent of men and 8 percent of women have accidentally sexted family members, so there are certain drawbacks to the habit. However, those who get it right seem to report mostly positive results.

In the end, it’s probably getting it right that makes all the difference. For the most part, the humiliating sext lists we see online are goofy mishaps that are extraordinarily unlikely to happen to you. In fact, a lot of them are probably faked just to make for more interesting and amusing lists. Still, it’s easy enough to send a bad sext without it being a Buzzfeed-worthy gaffe. For example, you may sext a little too soon, or a little too aggressively; you may tease and then not follow up, or be blunt without much creativity. To navigate these sorts of issues, Your Tango’s 8 Do’s & Don’ts (when it comes to sexting) is actually a pretty handy guide‚ particularly if you’re new to the practice, or in a new relationship.

But ultimately, it seems as if sexting isn’t as much of a joke or taboo subject as some might think. Experts and ordinary people agree that there are potential benefits to relationships, and so long as you go about it the right way you may even discover a whole new brand of foreplay. So go ahead and whip out your phone and send a sext‚ just double check it before you press send!

Spending Valentine’s Day Online (Can Actually Be Fun)

It’s that time of year again where it feels like everyone is in love. If you are in love (like me) congratulations. But, if you’re single and spending Valentine’s Day alone, is that really such a bad thing? Of course not. If you can’t be with the one you love, there’s an app for that.

With everything you could be doing, there’s no reason to get caught up in the Valentine’s Day pressure. Here are my top 5 online activities to occupy yourself with on February 14th:

1. iTunes Movie Trailers (app or website)

How better to drown your sorrows or celebrate your celibacy than indulging in some movie trailers? Even if you’ve already read the book, the second “Fifty Shades of Grey” trailer is worth watching.

2. Ruby Fortune (app or website)

Sit back with a drink and play the Ladies’ Night game on Ruby Fortune. Nothing adds a little glamour to a night more than some glitzy casino games. You can even have a few of your single girlfriends over for a virtual casino night.

3. Spotify (app or website)

It’s not Spotify itself that will make your night, it’s the playlist you create or search for.  Like love songs? How about this little song to melt even a snow queen’s heart:

4. Pizza Navigator (smartwatch app)

Now we’re talking! Pizza Navigator is the ultimate smartwatch app that directs you to the nearest pizzeria. What’s not to love?

5. Wake Up Well (smartwatch app)

Wake Up Well is better suited for February 15th when you may be a little hung over. This app uses the science of sleep to wake you up gently at an optimal time for your sleep cycle ensuring that you aren’t groggy throughout the day. It’s basically an artificial intelligence boyfriend.

4 Smartphone Apps to Get You in Socialite Shape

4 Smartphone Apps to Get You in Socialite Shape

It’s not too late to get into serious shape for summer! If you have a smartphone, then you already have a health coach in your pocket. Your smartphone is always with you, can track how you are doing, and can make recommendations as to how to improve your health. If it gets too annoying, there is always the power button.

A 2013 study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research found most people are open to using personal health apps on their phones, since they offer good information about users’ current health and provide ways to track progress.

Additionally, the design and manufacturing of medical equipment is an expensive task. Smartphones can be a platform on which new medical technology can be implemented and used at a much lower cost than normal. Inexpensive, disposable sensors can be developed that plug into a smartphone to monitor everything from heart rate to blood glucose levels, according to Newsfactor. This means everyone can have a personal health-monitoring machine in their pockets.

Current personal health apps focus on recording your state of health and tracking trends. You can watch these trends to reward yourself for positive progress and make adjustments to your lifestyle to improve your long-range health outlook. Of course, these apps can also tell you how poorly you’re doing. You still have the choice of staying with your fitness program or not.

Here are some personal health apps to help you get started with your own pocket health coach, whether you’re a loyal iPhone user or love your phone with bluetooth from T-mobile.

1. Nike Training Club

This app will get your heart rate up with a set of your choice from 90 cardio workouts. You can set your own personal goals and track your progress toward them, making adjustments so you’ll see steady improvement. Once set up, several 30-45 minute sessions are created to get you to your goal. You still have to do the work, but this app takes the planning and tracking off of you. This app is free and available on the iTunes Store for iOS or Google Play for Android devices.

2. Moves

This app turns your smartphone into a device that tracks your footsteps throughout the day. It can also record miles cycled on your bicycle. This app helps you analyze your daily movement patterns and tells you where you can make adjustments for better health. After a couple weeks of collecting data, you may discover that Wednesday is normally a day of little activity for you, so you can build in a walk at lunch to balance the day out. This app is free for iOS devices.

3. UP by Jawbone

UP looks at your entire life to understand your health. Sure, you’re faithful to your circuit training, but if you’re angry all the time, your health will suffer. Using a wristband to monitor movement and sleep, this app also lets you record your eating habits and moods. The app is free, but you’ll have to buy a wristband at $129.99. The app is available for iOS and Android

4. Fooducate

Learn more about the food you eat with this app. It helps you understand food labels and tells you what is “good” and “bad” about the food. This is a free app for iOS and Android.

What health app is your favorite? Share your thoughts in the comments.
