5 Things I’ve Learned From the Disney Princesses

I’ve always related to the elegance and aspirational qualities of the Disney Princesses.  It’s good to know that I actually learned something during the countless hours I spent as a child watching Disney movies on VHS, rewinding them, and watching them again directly after.  You know you did it too.  I didn’t realize it at the time, but during these back to back Disney Princess sessions, I was learning a lot about what it means to be a fashionista and full-fledged Aspiring Socialite in 21st Century New York.

Here’s what I’ve learned from my favorite Disney Princesses:

1.  Sleeping Beauty: Princess Aurora has always been my personal favorite Disney Princess.  Having pricked herself on a spinning wheel even though she ran the risk of falling into an eternal sleep definitely shows that this Princess was serious about fashion.  But, what I’ve really learned from Sleeping Beauty is the importance of sleeping in.  After a big night out or even a big night in, I’ve been known to sleep till 4 p.m. the next day and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

2.  Belle: In Beauty and the Beast, Belle was a smart girl who read a lot of books.  You should treat everyone with kindness and respect because you never know when you’ll meet them again.  From Belle, I learned the importance of not judging people by appearances because you never know who they may actually be.

3.  Cinderella: Socialites aren’t always born; sometimes, they’re made.  Cinderella inspires the upwardly mobile aspirations in all of us proving the even if you come from modest means, you can still rule the world someday.

4.  Snow White: She knew she wasn’t really supposed to, but Snow White ate the apple anyway because she wasn’t a fan of dieting.  I’m not a binge eater or anything, but I’ve never been a fan of dieting either.  I’m not about to be counting calories when I get so much exercise walking around Manhattan.

5.  Ariel: In The Little Mermaid, Ariel longed to leave the ocean to live on land which reminds us all that tanning in a lounge chair by the pool can be just as refreshing as a long swim.

Socialista New York Style Session with OpenSky

This evening I met up with my MeetUp group Socialista New York founded by Amy Chandra of Midtown Girl.  The event was sponsored by the social shopping website OpenSky where you can shop the collections of your favorite style curators.  When a bunch of fashion people get together, we usually like to play with accessories and take pictures.  Who says adults can’t play dress-up?  Fashion bloggers do it all the time.  All of us got to play with OpenSky accessories and take pictures in front of a green screen like in the movies.  We then chose from a bunch of New York backgrounds.  I decided on the fall in Central Park background because so many pivotal scenes in movies were filmed there and I liked the leaves.  It was so great to connect with so many amazing and talented bloggers.  Can’t wait for the next Socialista event!
